Monitor PPI Calculator

Enter a resolution and screen size to get pixel density, pixel pitch, aspect ratio and the physical width and height of the panel.

How to use the Monitor PPI Calculator

  1. Choose a preset or type the width and height in pixels.
  2. Enter the screen diagonal in inches or centimeters.
  3. Read the PPI and pixel pitch.
  4. Compare against the common sizes table to judge sharpness.

How it is calculated

PPI is the diagonal in pixels divided by the diagonal in inches. The diagonal in pixels is the square root of width squared plus height squared. Pixel pitch is 25.4 divided by PPI, in millimeters. Physical width and height come from the aspect ratio and the diagonal.

The blend distance is where one pixel covers one arcminute of vision, which is 3438 divided by PPI, in inches. Sitting closer than this lets you see individual pixels more easily.

Frequently asked questions

What PPI is considered sharp?

There is no single cutoff, because it depends on viewing distance and eyesight. The blend distance in the results shows the distance where pixels start to merge.

Does a higher resolution always look sharper?

Only at the same screen size. A 4K 32 inch monitor and a 1440p 27 inch monitor can have a similar PPI.

How do I measure the screen diagonal?

Measure from one corner of the visible panel to the opposite corner, not the bezel. Most monitors list the diagonal in inches.

What is pixel pitch?

It is the distance between the centers of two neighboring pixels. A smaller pitch means a denser, sharper image.
